What There are several types of human papillomavirus (HPV) that infect cutaneous and mucosal epithelial tissues. Most people clear HPV infections, but the virus persists in some cases. Why Up to 90% of the general population will be infected with at least 1 genital type of HPV at some time in their lives. People with persistent HPV infection are at risk of developing HPV-associated cancers; the most common is cervical cancer.
